Sir Edwin Landsee Lutyens

Lutyens, Sir Edwin Landseer (1869-1944), English architect, born in London, and educated at the Royal College of Art. He began the private practice of architecture in 1888, at the age of 19. His earliest works, large country houses, were in a modified Tudor style. Gradually, however, he developed a more monumental and classical style, as evidenced in his designs for many of the public buildings in New Delhi, begun in 1913 and completed in 1930; for the British embassy in Washington, D.C. (1926-1929); and for more than 50 World War I memorials, including the Whitehall Cenotaph (1919) in London. Lutyens was knighted in 1918.
