Bengal, Bay of, arm of the Indian Ocean, between India on the west and Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) and the Malay Peninsula on the east. Many large rivers flow into the bay: the Ganges and the Brahmaputra on the north; the Irrawaddy on the east; and the Mahânadî, the Godâvari, the Krishna, and the Kâveri (Cauvery) on the west. On the western coast of the bay the harbors are poor, but on the eastern coast are many good ports, such as Sittwe, Moulmein, and Tavoy, all in Myanmar. The islands in the bay, which is about 2090 km (about 1300 mi) long and about 1610 km (about 1000 mi) wide, include the Andaman and Nicobar groups.
