Chenâb, river of Asia, 960 km (600 mi) long. Rising in the Himalayas in Himâchal Pradesh State, India, the Chenâb first flows northwest through the area of Jammu and Kashmîr controlled by India. It then takes a generally southwestern direction through Punjab Province of Pakistan, where it joins the Sutlej River, a tributary of the Indus River. The waters of the Chenâb are used in irrigation. It is one of the "five rivers" of the Punjab.
